George Floyd case: Former officer Derek Chauvin released on $1 million bond

Derek Chauvin, one of four former Minneapolis police officers implicated in the death of George Floyd, has been released from prison after posting a $1 million bail.

Chauvin was charged in May with second-degree murder and third-degree murder and manslaughter after video footage of Floyd’s death sparked national outrage earlier this year.

Floyd, a 46-year-old father, could be heard telling officers he couldn’t breathe at least 28 times as Chauvin knelt on his neck for more than 8 minutes.

Court documents show Chauvin posted bail Wednesday and was released shortly before 11:30 a.m., The Associated Press reported.

The Department of Corrections confirmed he was no longer at the Minnesota facility where he had been in custody since May.

It was not immediately clear where Chauvin got the money to pay for his bond. Records released later Wednesday indicated he used a bail bond agency to pay for his release.

According to the AP, Chauvin had the option of posting bail for $1.25 million without conditions or $1 million with conditions. Under the conditions of his release, he must attend all court appearances, cannot have any direct or indirect contact with any members of Floyd’s family, cannot work in law enforcement or security and must not possess any firearms ammunition.

J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao, the other three officers who were arrested in connection with Floyd’s death, previously posted bail amounts of $750,000 and have been free pending trial. All three have been charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and manslaughter.

All four former officers are scheduled to face trial in March 2021.
